Ale yeast favors warm temperatures and produces more complex, fruity esters with occasional peppery phenols. Lager yeast ferments at a cooler temperature and generally has a cleaner flavor profile. This process allows for more of the malt and hop flavors to shine through.
Light colored crisp beers with low to moderate hop bitterness. These beers showcase light malt flavors of biscuit and dough with a high level of drinkability.
Hop forward beers with moderate to high hop bitterness. Floral, spicy, piney, fruity, citrus, and/or resinous character present from the use of a variety of hops. Double/Triple/Imperial are terms used to infer higher alcohol content and more aggressive hop pro le.
Amber/red/brown beers named for their color. These beers have low hop bitterness and toasty, caramel, and nutty malt flavors.
Darker roasted malt profile with flavors of coffee/espresso, roasted meat, and/or chocolate, dried fruit and berry flavors.
Wild beers are fermented using wild yeast and bacteria. Expect a tangy, bright, sometimes funky sourness in these beers.
Wheat is higher in protein than the barley favored by brewers, which aids in the head retention and body of beer. American wheat styles are cleaner tasting with a light grainy flavor, while German Hefeweizens are favored for the banana/bubble gum and clove flavors produced by the yeast. Belgian’s call these beers “Wit Beer” meaning white and are brewed with orange peel and coriander. Specialty malts may be added for darker richer beers with notes of banana nut bread, vanilla, and raisin.
These beers are brewed using a Belgian yeast strain which produces high levels of fruity esters and peppery phenols. These beers are similar in flavor to German Hefewizens but typically do not contain wheat. Highly carbonated and very dry, these are refreshing, zesty beers with banana/clove notes in the lighter styles and plum/raisin in darker styles.
Brewed at session strength, these beers are favored for their balance and drinkability. Amongst the most popular emerging style categories, these beers are perfect for drinking multiple in one “session”.
